Do you ever feel like no matter how hard you try, there’s never enough? Not enough time, not enough money, not enough opportunities?
Do you constantly doubt yourself, stress about the future or feel jealous of other’s successes?
Do you feel guilt about spending money? Do you feel a sense of despair?
You’re not alone.
These feelings are a result of a scarcity mindset, and it’s holding you back. Today, we’re going to explore how scarcity mindset can negatively impact your life and what you can do to break free.
A scarcity mindset is a belief system rooted in limiting beliefs and self-limiting beliefs that there is never enough—whether it’s money, time, or resources. It silently sabotages every aspects of our lives and the way we operate in the world.
This mindset influences our subconscious mind, impacting our money mindset by fostering fear and anxiety around money and our finances. People with a scarcity mindset often struggle to see opportunities for growth and abundance, instead focusing on what they lack. By understanding and addressing the scarcity mindset, we can shift towards an abundance mentality, transforming our financial outlook and opening ourselves up to greater success and prosperity.
First, the fear of spending money. You may find yourself constantly worrying about spending, even on items that you need. You find that when you do spend money, you feel like you don’t have enough, or you’re wasting your money. You may find that you feel this way, even with money in the bank!
You might shop around to make sure you get more bang for you buck, but you end up buying cheap items on sale, that you don’t really want or need and because they are cheap, they don’t end up lasting long anyway and you end up chucking it all away.
This anxiety keeps you stuck in a cycle of lack. These negative feelings doesn’t align with feelings of abundance, which means you aren’t vibrating in the frequency of money. So it can hold you back from attracting more into your life.
Next, avoiding risks. Perhaps you run away from new opportunities, fearing loss more than valuing potential gains.
I remember throughout my life, my parents were given plenty of opportunities to buy property. My mum would jump at the chance, but my dad would always be fearful and doubtful that the property would lose it’s value. Only years later, will he realise that he “shoulda” taken the leap, when the properties quadrupled in value! But obviously by then its too late.
This is a common example of having a scarcity mindset. You could be presented with a great opportunity, whether in life or business, yet you shy away from it because you’re scared of loss. By allowing this, it can keep you from growing and experiencing great things in your life. And you could end up filling your life with “shoulda” “coulda” “woulda’s” instead of abundance.
Hoarding is another sign. This is when you keep things you don’t need, “just in case”. When you do this, you can potentially hold onto things that don’t even light you up, and then you end up filling your space with items that don’t make you happy. This clutters your physical space, which then clutters your mind and when you operate like this, you’ll be unfocused, stressed, frustrated and vibrating at a low frequency. Which then affects your wealth.
Constantly comparing yourself to others is a hallmark of a scarcity mindset. You may scroll through social media, feeling inadequate and envious of other people, their lives and their success.
These feelings are of the lowest vibrational frequency. It makes you feel like sh*t all the time, and it stops you from living out your full potential because you are constantly telling yourself that you will never be as good or successful as them. Or you’ll never have a life like them.
Overworking is another symptom of a scarcity mindset. This is where you believe you must work harder and longer to get anywhere in life. This mentality leads to stress, anxiety and burnout and you’ll end up neglecting all other important aspects of life such as your own hobbies outside of work and your friends and your family.
This is particular prominent in those who were brought up in working class families where they watched their parents work hard for money. Its a deep seated belief that is programmed into our subconscious.
You may charge less than your worth because you have a fear of not getting clients or losing clients. This lack of worth, not only burns you out, because you have to work more to make more, it also limits your financial growth. Because if you’re charging piddly amounts of money for your service and your time, how are you going to change your wealth or achieve the goals that you set for yourself?
Imposter syndrome is a huge one that often accompanies a scarcity mindset. This is when you feel you don’t deserve success, or have an idea that you’re not good enough to be successful. Imposter syndrome leads to self-sabotage and missed opportunities.
This is a serious mindset, that runs rampant in most of us. Even with people who are already successful! If you let Imposter Syndrome take over your life, you’re not going to be able to move forward in your life or in your business because it affects EVERYTHING.
This is when you hold yourself back from sharing ideas, getting yourself out there or taking initiative, because you doubt your worth and fear judgement from others. Alot of entrepreneurs that I know experience this scarcity mindset and they end up stuck in their business, because of this.
If you own a business yourself and you want to market it to the world, you won’t get anywhere if you’re too afraid to get it out there. Marketing is all about letting people know who you are (if you’re building a brand around yourself) or letting others know about your business.
I know how scary it is to get yourself out there. Especially with all the haters and trolls who like to spend their days shitting on people dreams, but don’t let this stop you. There is always going to be hater, no matter how much good you put out into the world. But if you let the fear of these haters affect you and your business, you won’t be able to get out there and affect people who need your service. You won’t be able to make an impact. Just remember out of the 10 people you can affect positively, you will get 1 hater. Just remember that usually, they are hating on people because their not happy with themselves. So it’s not about it. But imagine how many lives you can affect, just by facing your fears and getting yourself out there! And it will be a ripple affect….
You may find it difficult to give or share with others, whether it’s your time, your money, or your resources, because you’re afraid that doing so will leave you with less. This can limit your ability to build meaningful relationships and contribute positively to your community.
If you’re always stopping yourself from “helping others”, you’re not growing the seed of self worth either. There’s much to be said about the feeling of living a meaningful and purposeful life, when you live a life of service. So don’t close yourself from being generous of your time.
This is where you constantly doubt your abilities and potential, reinforcing the scarcity mindset. And this self-doubt, could lead to a continuous tirade of negativity. It’s like having a devil on your shoulder, constantly telling you how terrible you are at doing things, criticizing you at every single move. If this negative self-talk gets the best of you, the fear of moving forward is going to get bigger and bigger and before you know it, you’ve stagnated in your business and in your own personal development.
Our subconscious mind plays a huge role in shaping our mindset. To be successful, it’s 80% mindset and 20% the “how to.” When you have a scarcity mindset, your subconscious mind influences your beliefs. It’s the subconscious mind that fuels us, controlling our habits, motivation, and actions without us even realizing it!
